Backgammon Ayr is pleased to announce the inaugural Jim Smart Memorial competition taking place on 24th May 2026.

Jim was the previous organiser of the Ayr club who sadly passed away in January. An ever-present since the club’s founding in 2019, Jim’s health saw him attend less frequently in 2025 but he was still playing backgammon regularly online.

Players will compete for the Jim Smart Memorial Shield which the club will retain and the winner will receive a mystery prize. There are no cash prizes as this is to be a fun, social event for players of all abilities. Even if you are a new player or don’t like the doubling cube you will be able to take part!

Entry is free but limited to 32 players. The competition will be a Swiss-style tournament. A light buffet will be provided. To register you interest please email jimsmartmemorial@backgammonscotland.uk.

Competition Details

• Swiss-style tournament of 4 or 5 rounds duration will be played. Player numbers are capped at 32.
• Initial random draw then random within groups with the same number of wins (if an odd number one player drops into the next group).
• No repeat opponents.
• Rounds will be a maximum of 5-point matches.
• Clocks are optional but there will be a fixed time limit for each round.
